Paint Selection Tips
Color Selection
Picking the perfect color for your project can be a challenge. Check out the below tips to help you select the colors that you will enjoy for years to come.
Color Selection Tips:
- Consider the colors and patterns in each space you plan to paint. If you have a pattern that stands out, you may want to consider selecting a color from the pattern that you enjoy.
- If painting more than one room, start with the formal areas and work your way from there. Think about selecting a shade that will compliment your existing color scheme.
- Use color samples or a color wheel so you can see a variety of shades next to each other that you like.
- Check the color samples at different times of the day and in various locations to determine how different types of lighting, including natural and electric lighting, will effect how the color appears in your space. Check in places that get lots of light and in shadows as this will make a difference in the appearance of your color.
- 60-30-10 Rule – Try to balance colors in your rooms by having 60% of a primary or dominant color, 30% of a secondary color and 10% as a highlight. Having a balance of color will give enough pop without anything over the top.
Types of Paint
- Latex Paint – This non-flammable, environmentally friendly paint dries fast and is easy to clean with water. Latex paints offer less fading, cracking, and peeling than other types of paint and doesn’t fade or yellow over time like oil based paints can.
- Oil Based Paint – This durable paint is better at covering damaged areas or imperfections and covers more thoroughly in one coat. The disadvantages of oil based paints are that it is easier to crack and yellow over time.
- Primer & Paint Blends – These options offer less coats to achieve a finished look. With this option there is no need to apply a base coat of primer before applying paint.
- Stain-Blocking – This a newer type of paint that is easy to clean and mildew resistant. In high humidity areas like, Florida this can be a great option to keep maintenance to a minimum.
Selecting the Sheen
Based on the areas you are painting, you will want to consider the options of paint sheen that will best meet your needs and goals.
- Flat – This low-sheen option is non-reflective and hides minor imperfections. Use this type of paint for low traffic areas, interior walls and ceilings.
- Matte – A durable, easy to clean options that is easy to touch up. It offers a reflective finish and hides minor imperfections. Great for low to moderate traffice areas such as interior walls and bedrooms.
- Eggshell Enamel – This is a great option for moderate traffic areas such as living rooms. Eggshell Enamel offers soft yet elegant finish.
- Satin Enamel – With a soft and mildly reflective finish, this is a great option for high traffic that may have some moisture exposure such as kitchens and bathrooms.
- Semi-gloss Enamel – With a radiant, reflective finish, this option is great to use for high traffic areas including cabinets, trim and areas exposed to moisture such as the bathroom.
- High-gloss Enamel – With a brilliant sheen, this reflective finish is a great option for high traffic areas. This is the easiest to clean of all options which makes it a great choice for trim.
